本論文旨在探討美國小說《鹽的代價》和台灣小說《鱷魚手記》中的女同性戀人物因性傾向所遭遇的磨難，及書中人物的相應策略。於一九五二年出版的《鹽的代價》，作者是派翠西亞·史密斯，此書深刻描寫年齡相距甚大的少婦卡蘿與少女特芮絲的愛情故事。前者的婚姻關係處於分居狀態，後者與伴侶穩定交往但缺乏進入婚姻階段的決心，兩人於一九五零年代美國，受到的現實阻力，與美國國內的政治意識形態相關，對於共產主義的恐懼間接導致對同性戀的排擠與歧視，引發了對於同志性傾向的恐懼。然而，此書迎來的卻是有別於時代潮流的光明結局，箇中原因，有些或可用存在主義心理學家暨精神科醫師歐文·亞隆的團體心理治療理論解釋之。《鱷魚手記》的作者為邱妙津，故事背景設定在台灣解嚴後，位於台北的一流大學，一群女孩一起從菁英女子高中升學、相遇、相知、相戀，在還沒正式畢業踏入社會前，已深諳異性戀規範化的社會規則，因此掙扎、受苦於內心對同性愛戀的渴望與不可得。相較於《鹽的代價》卡蘿與特芮絲走到一起的戀情結局，《鱷魚手記》中的主角拉子的痛苦更為深沉內化，其聰明敏感的性格為小說增添戲劇張力，然而，也為其自身帶來悲劇收場的自我預言展演。

本論文於第一章檢視兩文本中的女同性戀所受之磨難與異性戀規範、強制異性戀有關。第二章使用歐文亞隆的團體心理治療理論中的療癒因子和自我揭露概念，針對文本中女性角色的互動，進行相關探討和解釋。第三章先介紹馬嘉蘭的觀看機制理論，延續其論點中的曝光同志身分作為對抗策略，進一步討論拉子與鱷魚的關係；第三章後半段則連結到酷兒理論：伊娃·賽菊克的情感與朱迪斯·巴特勒的展演，以檢視女同性戀的苦難是否有其他可能的出口。

This thesis aims to investigate lesbian characters’ troubles because of their same-sex sexual orientation as well as their resistance strategies in The Price of Salt and Notes of a Crocodile. The Price of Salt, by Patricia Highsmith, is a 1952 American lesbian romance novel and Notes of a Crocodile, by Qiu Miao-Jin, is a coming-of-age lesbian fiction set in post-martial law Taiwan from 1989 to 1991. These two texts are both iconic lesbian novels that capture the lesbian characters’ poor souls and aching hearts, yet end differently. In chapter one, protagonists’ suffering caused by heteronormativity and compulsory heterosexuality are investigated in both novels. In addition, there are further discussions about politics and spaces that are used by female characters to escape from heteronormativity. In chapter two, Irvin D. Yalom’s therapeutic factors and self-disclosure are introduced to examine the texts. In the third and final chapter, resistance strategies developed by queer theories, including coming out, affect of shame, and queer performativity, are applied to investigate the texts.
