Traditionally, libraries, museums, galleries, and archives have been the primary institutions providing vast collections of images, including paintings, artifacts, and historical documents. With the advent of the internet, image resources can now be accessed and utilized through a variety of channels. Image search engines, social media platforms, and databases are some of the image retrieval tools that have emerged. In current image retrieval systems, the organization of image information largely relies on either manual indexing by individuals or automated processes. However, images possess unique characteristics that distinguish them from textual information; they contain multiple layers of visual content. A single keyword can evoke numerous images, and a single image can inspire a wide range of descriptive terms. If these textual descriptions fail to accurately convey the image's meaning, there may be a mismatch between the searcher's intent and the results, often leading to unsuccessful retrievals. This study aims to deeply explore the image retrieval behaviors exhibited by visual designers during their work tasks, focusing on how they conduct image searches, the sources and channels through which they acquire information, the types of keywords they use, and the processes they employ to evaluate image relevance. The research adopts a qualitative approach, using retrieval tasks and interviews as the basis for data collection and analysis. This study aims to explore in-depth the image retrieval behaviors exhibited by visual designers during their work tasks, focusing on how they conduct image searches, the sources and channels through which they acquire information, the types of keywords they use, and the processes they employ to evaluate image relevance. The research findings reveal that visual designers primarily use a "keyword search" strategy, supplemented by "browsing." Online resources, particularly Pinterest and Google Images, are vital channels for visual designers seeking images. The evaluation of image relevance is based on a variety of criteria, including thematic relevance, subjective aesthetics, inspirational value, emotional impact, and technical attributes. The keywords used by designers display diversity, with a strong emphasis on both specific and general concepts, while emotional terms also play a significant role in their search strategies. |
