The purpose of this research is to explore the health information behavior of swimmers, including the context and the content of health information need, information seeking and information sharing. The research object is swimmers and the age is over 18 years old.
This study used semi-structured interviews to collect data and understand swimmers’ health information behavior. The researcher used snowballing method to collect participants who are qualified in this research. Finally, there were 17 participants in total. They were interviewed via Google meet and Line afterwards.
The results of this study demonstrated that: (1) The context and the content of swimmers’ health information needs are almost related to daily training and swimming competition. (2) Internet and search engines (such as Google and Safari) are the most commonly used by swimmers when finding health information, second is social media (such as YouTube, Instagram, Facebook). Offline resources include human relationships, printed materials, and school programs. (3) The difficulties encountered when swimmers search process are: inability to distinguish information quality, the searching results are not up to snuff, there are problems in the selection of keywords, and information lacks depth and variety. The solutions include: extensive reading, consulting professionals, and Try it. (4) Most respondents will decide to share the health information or not based on if they are close relationship, and they usually share through oral and forward links. And the motivation of sharing are helping the other, obtain more information, and gain a sense of accomplishment.
Based on the above research findings, this study has some suggestions: (1) Suggestion for swimmers are that they can pay more attention on health information at ordinary times, and directly confirm with professionals (such as coaches, professors, protectors, etc.) when they aren’t clear on health information; (2)The suggestion for the relevant sports management team is to provide relevant health education for swimmers and increase their own health knowledge; (3) The suggestion for the information provider is to build a website or APP dedicated to swimmers' health topics, and its content has been evaluated by professionals.
In addition, this study suggests that future research can (1) further explore the specific effects of swimmers' intimate relationships with others and health information sharing behaviors; (2) further study swimmers' existing health knowledge and health information gap in demand.
