This study aims to examine whether women’s political participation can promote the deployment of renewable energy, and further to investigate if this impact varies with governance quality and social development. Using panel data covering 62 countries from 1997 to 2020, this study conducts empirical analysis through a fixed effects model and applies interaction terms to explore the interplay between women’s political participation and governance quality as well as social development level. The main findings are as follows: (1)Women’s political participation and positively affects renewable energy consumption, indicating a beneficial effect of women’s political empowerment on renewable energy deployment; (2) The effect of women’s political participation on renewable energy consumption is enhanced with higher level of governance quality; (3) The effect of female political empowerment on renewable energy deployment also is increased with higher levels of social development. Further threshold analysis shows that the effect of women’s political participation turns positive in countries where governance quality exceeds 52.31% or HDI surpasses 74.16%. These results remain robust for a battery of sensitivity tests. |
