The purpose of this study is to understand users' behaviors in university library makerspaces, analyze their purposes and circumstances of using the space to optimize the operation management and design planning of domestic university library makerspaces. This form corresponding feedback for librarians or space managers to provide services as well as for reference by university library units when promoting similar spaces.
This study takes the makerspaces in domestic university libraries as the research target and adopts the observation and interview methods to collect data. The scope and limitations of the study are due to the fact that the target population is generalized in domestic spaces but specific to the region, as well as the familiarity of the target population with the space and the methodology of the study. Because the observation and interview methods emphasize the expression of external behavioral actions and the reflection of internal subjective thoughts, it is easy for the study participants to develop a bias towards the use of behavior, to explain only the deep parts of their own experiences and to answer the interview questions. When the subjects were observed and described the process of using behavior, they might have missed the simultaneous actions and expressions that existed during the process of using behavior, and were unable to collect the full range of behavior and extra-spatial changes that occurred during the process of using behavior. If the subject of the study is limited by the conditions of use of the library or has a daily life schedule of chores, even if he or she is willing to help or is recommended by a friend, he or she will not be willing to participate in the study even after learning about the subject of the study, which is a difficulty that cannot be grasped. This study was conducted with the consent of the libraries and communication with the librarians, and the users of the makerspace of four domestic university libraries were collected by random sampling and snowball sampling manner, and the appropriateness of the questions was confirmed by extending the time spent in the research field and iteratively. The criteria for the number of subjects and data saturation of the study were based on Li Li-hong and Yang Zheng-mei (2020) and supplemented by Bowen's (2008) conceptualization.
After that, qualitative content analysis was used for coding and Christesen's (2017) Jobs-To-Be-Done Theory was used to compile the findings. However, the users of the university library's makerspaces in this study were all those who had experience in using the university library's makerspaces.
The conclusions of this study are as follows: a. The main goals of using the space are courses, extracurriculars, and projects; b. Sharing with friends is the main conduit of information; c. Usage patterns include light use, selective use, potential use, and no use at all; d. The barriers to promotion are limited hours of operation and insufficient publicity; e. The barriers to the environment of the space are poorly planned environmental routes, insufficient equipment, and lack of maintenance; f. The barriers to service delivery are poorly organized and maintained; and g. The barriers to the use of the space are poorly organized and maintained. Barriers to services: Incomplete and incorrect instructions for use, inadequate reservation mechanism, and lack of continuous tracking by service providers. Expectations and recommendations for use: 1. Adequate hours of use 2. Updating the existing flexible equipment and its types 3. Establishing a feedback mechanism for use of the services 4. Optimizing the contents and methods of publicity
Based on the conclusion of this study, it is suggested that the management unit of the university library's makerspaces can try to (1) open up the use of the space once a month on holidays or extend the use of the space on weekdays (2) expand the types of equipment and publicity channels (3) optimize the booking and consultation services (4) enter into the community of creators or collaborate with professionals with professional knowledge and special skills to publicize the space (5) open up external partners and future development projects; Relevant makerspaces can try to (1) develop other social media platforms and channels (2) cooperate with library-related units to popularize the use of information.
Future research suggestions include expanding the research subject and conducting research on behavioral topics. Since the user community relies on or trusts the usage information provided by the service providers, it is possible to focus on the service provider community to understand the impact of the service providers on the behavior of using the makerspaces in university libraries. On the other hand, library makerspaces is a space that emphasizes interaction and has an active atmosphere, so research can be conducted on different user groups to understand the impact of specific user behaviors on the use of the space.
