英文摘要 |
This thesis is an attempt to capture the key factors of the mediation success in the political crisis that erupted in Kenya following the December 2007 presidential elections. The mediation was conducted by former United nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and a panel of eminent African personalities, who took over the mediation efforts after initial attempts to bring the feuding parties to the negotiating table failed. The mediation efforts, under the leadership of Kofi Annan lasted 41 days and culminated in a power-sharing deal that created a position of Prime Minister for the opposition leader Raila Odinga and split cabinet positions between ODM and PNU. The key factors of the mediation success include the personal standing of the chief mediator Kofi Annan and the way he managed the mediation process as well as the overwhelming support and pressure that emanated from the United States and the European Union who were involved at the outset of the crisis and throughout the whole mediation process. The power-sharing deal hammered out by Annan brought an end to the political crisis that threatened to destabilize the entire region. |
