With the information science and technology vigorous development, the Internet has become the most popular way of communication in the digital era. Via Internet, users can connect and share with each other across culture differences and preferences. Therefore, in order to create a website to fit in various users’needs, cultural differences are very important to be considered. On the other hand, for fitting in with cultural differences, racial needs, and efficiency of transmission, interface design is also the most crucial factor. This study analyzed what cultural difference in website usability testing between Taiwanese and American using multi-language website, and based on the result of experiment, the consideration and suggestions for cross-culture website design are presented.
This study focuses on the website which supports language of traditional Chinese and English, and the website has the same interface design in both language environments. The study sample of Taiwanese students and American students come from various universities in Taiwan. Five Taiwanese students and five American students were asked to do a Microsoft Office Online website usability test. Via the usability test and interview to investigate the users’ habit, preference, and special characteristic in website using between Taiwanese and American users.
The conclusions of the research findings are summarized as following:
1.There is no difference obviously in Microsoft Office Online website usability testing between Taiwanese users and American users.
2.There are common and uncommon characteristic in using the preference of website interface between Taiwanese and American users.
3.The cross-culture website design should be based on usability principles, and consider users’ differences and preference.
In terms of the foregoing conclusions, two parts of suggestions have been concluded:
1.Suggestions for usability testing.
(1)Considering the subjects’ information literacy.
(2)Reducing heterogeneity in the subject groups.
(3)Experimenting repeatedly in order to promote reliability of the results.
(4)Training the testers.
2.Suggestions for the future research: In order to face the tendency of globalization, sampling from various countries to find out the users’ habit and preference in using website is critical. In addition, the future study can look into the style and trend of website design which in different culture background.
