The following thesis examines factors of Taiwan’s democratization during Chen Shui-bian period (2000-2008) using the analytical framework of timing, resources, and obstacles factors and document analysis method. In the examination of Chen’s presidency, findings from the study firstly support that Taiwan’s democratization is considerably linked with two specific themes: (1) sovereignty issue and (2) party politics. Secondly, three political actors Taiwan-the United States-Mainland China played significant roles in creating both resources and obstacles for Taiwan’s democratization following Chen Shui-bian leadership. Thirdly, major transitions of democratic movements from 2000 to 2008 in Taiwan went in line with inefficiency in government quality; and thus, constant political struggles between Kuo Min Tang (KMT) and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) were reserved for resolving issues regarding Taiwanese identity politics, constitutional reforms, U.S. policy, and Mainland China policy. |
