Studies show that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has proven to have a positive effect on the economic growth and capital formation of the host economy. Many studies have been conducted around the world with empirical evidence supporting the positive relationship between these two variables that sometimes have been mixed up leaving gaps in the literature. In an attempt to address this problem, a selection was made with a group of countries where the effects of FDI manifests similarly on their economy, regardless of the power of their economy. Doing so could lead to a deeper and further understanding of the real impact FDI could have on countries with varying economic backgrounds.
In this paper, two groups of countries have been selected for the study: the ones where the net inflow of FDI is positively related to the GDP and the ones where the net inflow of FDI is negatively related to GDP. An investigation was made in order to find the determinants which connect the inflow of FDI leading to a strong impact on the economic growth (GDP % annual growth). A selection of a time span of 20 years (1997 - 2017) was made in order to have a broader picture of the changes occurred over the period. The GEE model was used which helped to create a new variable to show the direction of the relationship between the variables.
This study investigated the impacts of diverse variables, on the relationship between FDI and GDP, and also uncovered the underlying reasons that the inflow of FDI did not facilitate GDP growth in some of the countries studied.
