Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, the People’s Republic of China and Latin America have experienced a boom in their economic relations that lifted Chinese commerce and investment in the western hemisphere from a mere US$10 billion from the year 2000 to an astounding US$258 billion by 2016. This is an interesting development as Latin America has historically been labeled as the United States’ backyard. Since the era of the Monroe Doctrine, Latin America saw itself entangled with Washington, which on the other hand never doubted to intervene in Latin American internal affairs. Over time, the United States has implemented military, political, and economic interventions in Latin America. However, all those interventions ultimately created a sense of anti-Americanism and a rise of left wing parties in the region. The PRC, on the other hand, is approaching Latin American countries with a different rhetoric. China’s five principles of peaceful coexistence includes the non-interventionist principle, and Latin American countries might feel attracted to this new option of handling foreign relations with an economically strong country in order to create development. The present study aims to analyze the possible reasons of Latin American countries welcoming the PRC into their homes, as well as to analyze the reasons why China is showing interest in Latin America.
