當今圖書館在採購資源時面臨了四大問題：圖書館經費缺乏、期刊費用高漲、電子資源快速發展和學術評鑑的壓力，為解決這些問題，圖書館無不尋求以有限經費獲取大量並能符合評鑑標準的期刊。合集因收錄大量的期刊，因之開始受到重視，並逐漸成為採購時的重點。合集雖有助於「一次購足」所需資源，但各合集間收錄的期刊重複，同時採購則產生經費額外的支出。
鑑於前述問題，本研究旨在探討合集對期刊採購的影響，採文獻分析、實證研究及訪談法三種方式進行。首先藉由文獻瞭解合集發展的現況及特性，接著經由實證研究分析EBSCO、Gale及ProQuest所發行之學術性和商學性主題的合集，分別從其收錄期刊數、延遲收錄的情況、重複率、變動性及收錄期刊的品質進行探討，據此結果製作問卷，訪談國內21所大專院校圖書館，以獲悉各館採購期刊時考量的要點及讀者提出的問題。
    本研究之結果，分為六種合集的比較分析與合集對圖書館採購單種期刊的影響兩方面，分述如下：
一、六種合集的比較分析：
（一）學術性合集即綜合性主題，有ASP、ARL及Onefile，分析結果如下：
  1、收錄期刊數，無論是資料量、全文期刊總數及過刊期刊總數，皆以Onefile的數據最高。
  2、延遲收錄的期刊，ASP的數據遠高於其他兩種合集。
  3、單一合集中期刊重複情況以Onefile最多；ARL與其他兩者的重複性過高，最易被替代。
  4、ARL、ASP和Onefile皆有全文缺期的情形，但合集內容以ASP變動幅度最大。
  5、ASP收錄的期刊品質最佳。
（二）商學主題合集包括ABI/INFO、BCRC及BSP，分析結果如后：
  1、BSP收錄的資料量和全文期刊總數最多，而過刊總數則以BCRC最高。
  2、BSP的延遲收錄情況較多，且延遲180天以上的期刊高達93%。
  3、期刊重複收錄的情況無論是單一合集中、兩兩相互比對或三者綜合分析的結果，皆以ABI/INFO重複的比例最高。
  4、BSP在內容增減部分的變動最大；BCRC全文缺期的情況最需留意。
  5、BCRC收錄的期刊其品質不及ABI/INFO及BSP。
（三）各匯集商（aggregator）之合集服務與內容比對結果。
  1、資料正確性方面以EBSCO出版的合集資料正確性較高，Gale則錯誤較多。
  2、同一合集匯集商出版之不同合集的比對結果，以BCRC與Onefile收錄期刊的重複率最高，且Onefile幾乎可將BCRC取而代之。
  3、系統功能以EBSCO之合集較為完善。
二、合集對圖書館採購單種期刊之影響有限，原因如下：
（一）部分合集匯集商規定採購合集時不可刪訂單種期刊。
（二）延遲收錄造成對現刊需求重，使得研究型單位採購時仍以期刊為主，合集為輔。
（三）圖書館對核心期刊的處理特別慎重，不輕易以合集取代。
（四）系所要求訂閱期刊的需求仍受重視。
（五）讀者對紙本期刊尚有需求。

    根據研究結果，本研究另提出下列三項建議：
一、匯集商對合集所提供的資料錯誤多，館員應適時反應，以免對資料使用者造成影響。
二、配合期刊出版時間進行比對，以驗證匯集商資料的正確性。
三、合集與單種期刊之抉擇不可僅考量重複性，仍須顧及其他之影響因素。

Libraries are facing four major obstacles in serial subscription at present: the shortage of funds, the rising cost of serials, the rapid development of electronic resources, and the pressure of academic evaluation. In order to solve these problems, libraries have to find the way to acquire a great number of serial with limited funds to meet evaluation standards. Collections have become increasingly important to library since collections consist of a large amount of journal titles. In fact, collection helps libraries to get “one-stop shopping” to fit their needs, but the overlap journals between collections causes extraneous expenses. 

The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of collection on serials subscription. By literature review, the study recognizes the development and characteristics of collection in the first place. Then, the categories of academic and business collections offered by EBSCO, Gale and ProQuest are analyzed by their size, embargos, journals overlap, stability, and journals quality. A questionnaire was developed based on the previous analysis and was conducted with 21 university libraries in Taiwan by interview to obtain the emphasis of serials subscribing and library users’ comcerns.

The following conclusions of the study are divided into two aspects:
First of all, the results of comparing of six collections:
1. Academic collections, ASP, ARL and Onefile, with comprehensive subject, the analysis results are as follows:
(1) The size of Onefile is the largest in terms of numbers of journals covered, including the full-text and archived journals.
(2) ASP provides the most numbers of embargoed journals. 
(3) Onefile has the most numbers of same titles counted as more than once. ARL provides the most same titles with other collection. Therefore it is more replaceable.
(4) ASP, ARL, and Onefile all have the full-text gaps. ASP comes with the most instability of content.
(5) ASP covers the highest quality journals.
2. Business collections include ABI/INFO, BCRC, and BSP. The comparison results are as follows:
(1) BSP provides the most numbers of full-text journals, and BCRC offers the most titles of archived journals.
(2) The numbers of embargoed journals of BSP are the most among all, and the ratio of embargoing over 180 days is 93%.
(3) The overlap rate of same journal title in ABI/INFO is the highest.
(4) BSP come with the most instability in the content, and BCRC is more noticed by its full-text gaps.
(5) Journals quality of BCRC is worse than ABI/INFO and BSP.
3. The findings of comparing the contents and services of aggregators’ collections are as follows:
(1) Data provided by EBSCO collections are the most correct, but Gale is adverse.
(2) Results of comparing different collections published by the same aggregator : the overlap rate between BCRC and Onefile is the highest, and Onefile almost can replace BCRC.
(3) System functions of EBSCO collections are more complete.

Second aspect: The impact of collection on single title subscription for library is limit, and the reasons are:
1. Some aggregators don’t allow cancellation of single titles while purchasing collection.
2. Single title subscritions are still the first priority for academic and research institutions, since the embargo in collection.
3. Libraries should concern the issues of core journals seriously. The collection can not represent a substitute for their print journal collections.
4. Requests of departments and graduate institutes for journal subscriptions are still important.
5. Users still have demand for print journals.


Based on the conclusions above, three suggestions are raised as follows:
1. Librarians have to response appropriately to the aggregators about the errors in collection, to prevent confusion to users.
2. Test and verify the accuracy of data with titles in collection through comparing print journals or individual electronic journal.
3. Overlap is not the only criteria for libraries to select the collection or single title.
