The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) emerged to ensure economic development and political stability in the region. Counting with ten member countries its main objectives today are to accelerate economic growth, social progress and cultural development in Southeast Asia as well as to promote peace and stability among the member countries. Despite being so diverse among themselves, the ASEAN member countries have been active in order to reach the Association’s goals, impacting the Southeast Asian region in economic, social and cultural spheres especially during the 21st century. Differently, in the other extreme of the world, the Latin American countries have established close to thirty regional organizations, some of which were extinct and none of which has come close to having the same impact in economic, social or cultural spectrums in their region such as ASEAN did in Southeast Asia. This work aims to analyze the key factors that led to the success of ASEAN as well as the failure of five main Latin American regional organizations in order to understand them and discuss possible alternatives to the Latin American region for a fruitful international cooperation. |
